Testing and inspection services

As a result of legal changes, the building industry, insurance companies and the buy-to-let market are demanding more frequent testing and inspecting of electrical installations. We help commercial, industrial and horticultural clients with advice on the testing intervals that apply to their particular industry type, as well as looking after homeowners and landlords across Bournemouth and Dorset.

As NICEIC registered installers our Dorset engineers issue the certification directly, and no job is too small — the estimate is free either way. If the inspection turns up work that needs doing, we can carry it out on the domestic or commercial side and certificate it in one go.

Frequently asked

Questions we get asked most

How often does a rental property need an EICR?

Since June 2020, private landlords in England must have the electrical installation inspected and tested at least every five years, with the first check before a new tenancy begins. Existing tenancies had to be covered by 1 April 2021. Inspections are carried out to British Standard BS 7671.

How often should an owner-occupied home be tested?

Domestic electrical installations should be tested at least every ten years. It is also worth having a report before you buy or sell a property.

What happens if the report finds a problem?

Where remedial work is required, landlords must have it completed within 28 days. We set out what we found in writing, quote separately for any remedial work and re-issue the paperwork once it is done.

How often should portable appliances be tested?

It varies with the condition, usage and age of the appliance and the installation. Our engineers will recommend an inspection interval that suits your industry and the way the equipment is used.

What are the rules on smoke and carbon monoxide alarms?

Since October 2015 landlords must fit a smoke alarm on every storey used as living accommodation, and a carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a solid fuel burning appliance. Alarms must be checked at the start of each new tenancy. We fit and test alarm systems, either as part of a report or as a job in their own right.

Your local electricians across Bournemouth and Dorset

Bournemouth is where most of our work is, and it has been that way for over thirty years. From Victorian conversions around Winton and Charminster to the newer estates at Talbot Village and the flats along the seafront, we know the sort of wiring we are likely to find before we lift a floorboard — which is why we can usually price a job accurately on the first visit.

We are based a short drive north in Ferndown, so the towns and villages either side of the A31 are part of our normal week too. Wimborne brings us a steady run of period-property rewires, West Moors and West Parley a mix of bungalow upgrades and consumer unit replacements, and Poole and Christchurch make up much of the rest. We take on larger contracts nationally as well.

If you are just outside these areas, call anyway — we travel further for larger jobs and we will tell you honestly if someone closer would serve you better.
